DIY OUTDOOR UMBRELLA

DSC_84521

we’ve come to the last post in our week of the with Clorox. hopefully you’ve found some time and space in your week to add some of the projects we’ve gone over and if not, there is always next week to give it a-go! we wanted to end the week with a fun DIY to get you ready for the warmer months ahead, a DIY outdoor umbrella! the whole project can be completed for less then $100 and is a high impact addition to any outdoor space.

here is what you’ll need:

  • patio umbrella, new or used – we purchased from IKEA
  • acrylic paint and brushes
  • colored tape
  • tassel fringe, available where you buy home interiors fabric (our 6.5 ft umbrella needed 7 yards of fringe)
  • glue gun

getting started:

  • you may want sketch out a few designs to come up with a plan, dots, dashes and stripes all look good and are easy, if you are inclined to get more complicated the options are limitless. we wanted ours to have a bit of a hand painted feel and opted for dashes, dots and a few other design elements to pull it all together.

make it:

  • tape off areas that may need masking and work out spacing and pattern density
  • paint areas that are taped off and other designs
  • wait until paint is dry and remove tape
  • with a warmed up glue gun adhere the fringe to the edge of the umbrella.

ta-da! a new outdoor umbrella for your space!

my patio is my happy place. i love spending time out there, hosting friends for drinks, having small celebrations or just eating dinner with my boyfriend. it’s definitely my favorite part of my house and it’s really important to me to keep it clean and orderly. we recently got a ton of rain in LA and it really did a number on my patio furniture and tile. pillows got moldy, there was mildew on the furniture and the tile was straight up dirty.

it sounds kind of crazy but it honestly upset me to see my favorite space like that so i spent an hour out there scrubbing and hosing everything down and it made a huge difference. i used and also their . i followed on how to clean everything and i recommend you do the same to find the right measurements and treatments.

BATHROOM REVAMP

bathroom revamp | designlovefest

how’s your week of going? have you followed along with any of our projects? we’d love to know! today we’re talking about the bathroom. i really like my bathroom. the layout, the tile, the bathtub, the fixtures…but it was still lacking an overall vision and felt rather chaotic. too many towels, mismatched everything, tons of almost gone products, etc. so we went in and made some simple adjustments and the outcome was SO much better!

it’s amazing what a few small tweaks can do to a space. and it was all very affordable, swapping out the bathmat, switching the towels up, streamlining my products and cleaning supplies. here are some before and after pictures. and that’s actually how my bathroom looked before (sadly i always have clothes on the floor!)

BEFORE AND AFTER:

i am only one person and live alone so there is no reason i need six towels and three bathrobes out!

i’m attempting to make it more of a habit to wipe down all of the bathroom surfaces a couple of times a week. having a clean bathroom is a great feeling and totally possible if i stay on top of it. i started using the and it really gets the job done and disinfects which is crucial when it comes to bathroom cleaning. i can  use it in the kitchen as well and the bottle is refillable which i really appreciate!

the cute bath rug is from esalerugs. they are all one of a kind but this is a similar . i’m normally all about white towels and robes but i thought it would be fun to add in some subtle color. we found at target and they did the trick (if you’re a white towel girl like me you know that keeping them white is tricky, i wash mine with a little bleach every other week to keep them looking fresh). also added in these to round out the color scheme.

HEALTHY CANDY BARS

gwyneth's candy bars | designlovefest

i have a pretty intense sweet tooth and i’m always open to new healthier ways of satisfying it. enter Gwyneth Paltrow’s healthy “candy bars”(i’m putting candy bar in quotation because although these are really good and satisfying they are not a snicker bar). i’ve seen people posting all over the internet about her recipes and i thought it was time we gave it a shot and let you know how it turned out. this recipe is exceptionally easy, apart from the fact that it has to set in the refrigerator for half a day, the active steps on this are under 15 minutes. the recipe didn’t ask for salt on top but in our opinion, the flavor was enhanced by a generous sprinkle of maldon salt.

i also wanted to ask for a bit of feedback on the recipe column, we work really hard to weekly bring you beautiful and practical meals and we’d love to know what you’re liking/not liking and what you’d like to see more of. we’ve had a few comments recently of people saying that they tried one of our recipes and that it was actually really good and not just pretty. i love those comments and i also wanted to say that we test and eat every single recipe. we aren’t making things just for the pretty photos, although those are fun too. we really want this to be a resource to you so let us know what you’d like us to focus on, we’re all ears! – joanie

what you’ll need:
• 1 1/2 cups raw cashews
• 1 1/2 cup dates, pitted and roughly chopped
• 1/2 cup almond butter
• 1/2 cup maple syrup (she asks for grade B, we used grade A)
• 1/2 cup coconut flour
• 1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
• 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (we used vanilla, either works great)
• 1 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (60% or higher cocoa content)

optional: maldon salt
