STYLED / 15

i missed a week on the styled posts because things have been crazy around here but we’re back on track now and ready to go! summer is almost here and it’s time to show some toe. there are a ton of cute sandal options out there right now and i’ve rounded up 9 favorites that are all under $100 (some of them far below that too!). for the most part, i like to stick a slide because they’re so easy to put on/don’t require any extra straps, and they also tend to be more comfortable because you don’t have anything rubbing against the back of your ankle and foot. there are some really cute espadrille out there though and they deserve some acknowledgement too. i even included an adidas sandal because honestly, i wear mine all the time and they’re seriously comfortable. – joanie

–  ($50) these are very girly but i think they’d be cute in the summer with a pair of cut off jean shorts or baggy denim pants. because the shoe is wider, they will also be flattering on the leg! –  ($23) i tried these on in the store and loved them and now regret not buying them. they are understated once you have them on and the block heel is the perfect amount of lift.
–  ($40) – navy blue velvet and those thin straps and really just a match made in heaven. –  ($60) – exaggerated bows with a side of jute. –  ($20) throw these in your bag for a day at the pool or beach. –  ($35) – i have a pair of this style sandal by Joie and they are my favorite. the double strap looks really chic on and they age really well since they’re made of leather. –  ($20)  – so cute and only 20 bucks! –  ($98) – i know white shoes are not always so practical but i think they are chic and i love this pair.
–  ($45) – as i mentioned above i wear my adidas sandals all the time. i have the classic version but our friend jesse has this style and they look so cool.

THIS FEELS BIG TO ME

gorman clothing | creative direction: bri emery photography: jesse chamberlin

okay, i am very excited to be writing this post. i’ve been saying for a while on here that i want to get into more creative direction for other brands. i’ve done quite a bit of it on this blog over the past 8 years, working with companies on sponsored posts, creating events, doing photoshoots and style posts for fun. i finally got to this point where i wanted to feel more confident with the title outside of the designlovefest brand and taking my vision to other companies and executing it. because while designlovefest is my #1 love and i will still be pursuing it on a daily basis, i feel like i have multiple facets to my style. i would love to have a brand come to me and  (photographer), and be able to create a complete look and feel for them, an entire photoshoot with a story that comes to life. sometimes i’m constrained within my own brand here, because well, it’s a brand that has its own identity already. and i like that. but i also wanted to be able to break those bounds and be experimental with each shoot we do. it’s my hope that people will still be interested in following my side path on this blog as well. and if not, that’s okay too!

so, this is our first real photoshoot together with that goal in mind. we made a list of brands we love and decided to just go for it. is a clothing brand i fell in love with when i visited melbourne australia with blogshop a few years ago. it’s such a bright, happy, fun, daring company. we presented them with the idea of an LA love story. a girl who starts off in the pits of heartbreak, goes through it, feels mixed emotions and eventually ends up on the other side of that darkness. most of us have been through heartbreak in our lives and can relate to the extreme ups and downs. i wanted it to resonate with people in whatever stage they are experiencing. (i’ve been here a few times in my life, that’s for sure) the finale is her writing on a fogged up car window and it says “end to begin,” which is something you just gotta do in that situation, right? let me take you through the story…and seriously thank you SO much for your support. and i have been texting each other crying emojis because we’re so happy to have each other and being able to create art together that people are interested in is truly amazing.

her heart was in 100 pieces.

the phase where you lounge around in silence or listen to sad music to make you even sadder. it hurts down to your bones. it’s so depressing it’s almost beautiful.

all i think about is you, you, you…

you’re driving around and pass your favorite restaurant together, and then that song comes on the radio that reminds you of them, and you can still hear their voice…it’s consuming, irritating, distracting. they are everywhere you turn.

SMOOTHIES

alison wu smoothies | designlovefest

last week we had the pleasure of hosting the smoothie queen, , in the studio for the afternoon. she whipped up these beautiful creations and also shared with us her top five smoothie making tips which, if you’ve ever tried to make a layered smoothie, you know they are a lot harder to achieve than they look! i love that she not only focuses on beauty but also on balanced creations that are good for your body too. her colors are all achieved naturally through things like dragon fruit powder and even E3live for the green color (so cool!). is filled tons of healthy inspiration and recipe ideas too. thanks for inspiring our smoothie game, alison!

and here are her top 5 smoothie tips!

+ Try swapping your normal banana for 3/4 cup frozen cauliflower, 1 medium-sized peeled zucchini or 6 oz of young coconut meat.
+ If you want to make a layered smoothie, think less liquid and no ice. You’ll want the consistency to be thicker, so your layers hold their own.
+ Get creative with your colors. I use for pink, for blue, spirulina for green and turmeric for yellow. Sometimes I’ll mix a couple blackberries with the Blue Majik to get a more purple tone, so don’t be afraid to experiment!
+ Be sure to add some nut butter and protein powder to keep you feeling fuller longer.
+ To add kiwis to the glass, just thinly slice the fruit and firmly push against the side of a dry glass. It should stick relatively easily!

i love that she’s using cauliflower as the base for many of her creations, she recommends keeping it to 3/4 cups of cauliflower per serving to keep it easy on the body to digest.

and this one kind of looks like those unicorn frappuccino that everyone is posting about, just the wayyyy healthier version!
