MADEWELL SALE!

if, like me, you missed all of the black friday sales just launched a major one that i think might even be better than their one last week! so many pretty pinks and yellows, velvets and silks and all sorts of cool boots for the winter season. i’ve rounded up 12 items that are favorites that i either own and love or would love to own. the metallic wide leg pants are seriously calling my name! as i mentioned before, i’m also a big fan of their as well. let me know what you buy or if you have something you love that i haven’t included! Xx – joanie

– i love a classic cableknit sweater and this color is such a pretty and modern take on a timeless design. and of course you can never go wrong with the cream option as well.

– such a smart little design with the arm holes that let you keep this scarf secures over your shoulders

– i’m ordering these pants asap. i have the denim version and love them but these are so chic and perfect for casual holiday gatherings.

– Madewell makes very flattering and comfortable jumpsuits. I own a version of this from last spring and i wear it all the time. You can put a turtleneck under this one and wear it all winter long.

– one thing that’s often missing from my closet are causal shirt options that are not a t-shirt. this one would be a great addition. i like that it’s long sleeved and has the simple addition of the tie in the front that sets it apart.

– i just bought a jacket this color in paris and i’m in love with it! it’s such an unexpected shade to wear in the winter and it really does go with so many things. i’ve been wearing mine non-stop!

– the perfect holiday travel pant or just laying around the house and wanting to be in pajamas without actually wearing your pajamas.

– madewell makes some seriously good boots and these blue velvet ones are such a nice departure from black!

– neutral color with a fun twist makes this sweater very wearable!

– i own these boots and i’ve worn the hell out of them. i just took them to europe and walked 8 + miles a day in them without issue.

– these metallic candles are the perfect hostest gift this holiday season!

– a sweet little mini skirt but the season, tights recommended!

SCONES!

scones | designlovefest

scones! not something you often reach for here in the states but i just returned from a glorious trip to England and it reignited my love for a proper scone. they’re often not done correctly here in America, they are not supposed to be overly sweet, the texture of a muffin, or too hard and crumbly. they are supposed to be soft, slightly flaky, subtly sweet and not too dense. and they should not have chocolate chips in them! during my summers in college i worked at a bakery in michigan and the pastry chef shared her recipe for scones with me. she really stressed to me that when you’re making something with very limited ingredients, like a scone, the quality of each ingredient really matters. use real vanilla, butter, sugar, flour, etc. because each item has a substantial contribution to the end result. if you think of yourself as someone who doesn’t like scones, i encourage you to try these because they changed my mind and they might change yours too.

they should be served with jam and clotted cream but where do you find clotted cream in the states?! i tried to get ivan to take on the clotted cream recipe but he couldn’t find unpasteurized heavy cream so it didn’t turn out as we hoped. serving them with lots of butter and jam works just fine. – joanie

scones
makes 8

what you’ll need//

• 3 cups flour
• 1/2 cup white sugar
• 3 teaspoons baking powder
• 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• 6 oz cold butter
• zest of one lemon or half an orange
• 2 eggs lightly mixed with a fork
• 1/2 cup whole milk
• 1 cup of whatever topping you’d like, we used dried cranberries but could do any dried fruit or chocolate chips, if you must.

how to make//

• pre-heat oven to 350 degrees
• in a large bowl shift together your dry ingredients until fully combined (salt, flour, baking soda + powder, sugar and zest)
• mix the vanilla, eggs and milk together, set aside
• cut your cold butter into small pieces and add to the dry ingredients you can either cut the butter into the mixture using your hands or pastry cutter. you want to mixed the butter in until it’s broken into little balls.
• once mixed, make a little hole in the center and pour in the wet ingredients. mix together until incorporated but do not over mix.

• put the dough on a greased cookie sheet, baking mat, or parchment paper and mold into a circle like you see below. make four even cuts across to create 8 scones.
• bake for 25-30 minutes, remove and serve with butter and jam.

ARTIFACT UPRISING GIFT GUIDE!

artifact uprising gift guide | designlovefest
artifact uprising gift guide | designlovefest

i’ve shared my love for a couple of times here on the blog and i thought it would be fun to team up with them and create a gift guide this holiday season. as a very sentimental person, giving the gift of memories is one of my favorite things to do. remember when i gifted everyone on my birthday trip their own marfa photo book? so many special times all captured in a book! i wanted to create a guide that was accessible to many different price points and also show how there is a photo gift for every area of the house and person in your life. i think that people often feel like photo gifts have to be a book or a framed personal image but they have so many options beyond that. a beautiful (and enormous!) print for your friend’s living room, a floral calendar for your mom’s office, a small hanging print for your brother’s apartment, a photo book for your partner’s coffee table, a little flip book for your sister’s wedding, etc. here are some items that i created this year for the important people in my life…. (and there’s a discount code!)

WEEKEND AT HOME / 91

i love switching up bookshelves and adding trinkets to them. it’s one of the simplest things to redecorate that can make a huge impact. , there’s something so fun about rearranging and adding pieces, and then seeing what works and what doesn’t. a few of my favorite things to include in a bookshelf are leaning framed art, handmade ceramics, and little plants. lately i’m really loving monochrome bookshelves with one main color throughout, like all white with a few pops of the same peachy pink. here’s some of my favorite bookshelf styling inspiration at the moment. what type of shelf styling do you love? –
