WEEKEND AT HOME / 108

i’m seeing pink seating everywhere, and i can’t help but swoon over it. from a blush pink sofa, to a pink velvet booth in a restaurant there’s something effortlesly chic about a pink seat. i recently got a pink desk chair and i’ve got to admit that it makes me that much more excited to start work when i sit down. what do you think about this look? too much pink or just right? let me know in the comments! –

WINE TALK

i’ve read a couple of articles recently that say wine consumption is at an all time high in america which made me think about my own wine drinking habits and realized that is definitely true for me as well. i used to be a mix of a wine and cocktail drinker. especially when eating out, i’d generally order a cocktail but now a days i’m almost exclusively ordering wine.

i also drink more often, i’ll have a glass most nights of the week and i’ve definitely gotten way more picky when it comes to what i drink. it feels like more than ever people are talking about natural wines and knowing where your wine comes from and that trend has certainly caught my attention. mostly because i’ve tried the natural wines and i feel so much better when i drink them, no headaches or foggy mind in the morning. i also used to purchase at the grocery store and just pick up whatever bottle caught my eye but now i find myself visiting a local wine shop instead, something i never really did because i thought wine shops only carried expensive bottles but i find lots of options under $20 which is sort of my threshold, anything under $20. i will say though that the increase in wine consumption has certainly increased my monthly food +beverage expenditures! but, i do find that i drink more often at home, having a friend over for a glass, rather than going out and paying $13+ for a mediocre one at a bar.

anyway, i’m curious if you find yourself drinking more wine these days? or if you’ve jumped on the natural wine bandwagon? do you drink during the week or only on the weekend? do you feel like your drinking preferences have changed with age? part of me thinks that my gravitation towards wine is just part of getting older. i’m always curious about people’s drinking habits. and if you have a favorite wine maker/label that you love and would recommend. i recently bought a few bottles from , they’re a husband and wife team here in california and i just opened their white blend last night and it was delicious.

i mentioned to my doctor that i was drinking red wine almost nightly, something i thought he’d try to get me to stop doing but he said he didn’t think it was a problem. he said if you’re having more than two glasses i’d tell you to cut back but 1-2 is fine. i thought that was surprising!

in the opposite direction, i’ve also noticed that there is an increase in people talking about going completely sober. how stopping drinking changed their life and i’m equally curious about that. have you thought about giving up drinking entirely? or have you already done it? – joanie

TIRIMISU

the best tiramisu recipe | designlovefest

my mom is the queen of desserts, we used to have a dessert corner growing up at our house and she always had something on hand whether we had guests or just our family. she has some classics that i can picture her making, mini chocolate tarts with fresh raspberries in the summer, bread pudding, creme brûlée with the perfect burnt sugar crust, molten chocolate cakes with warm liquid centers, toffee in the winter and tiramisu. the story that goes with the tiramisu recipe is that it was my mom’s favorite from an Italian restaurant in telluride and she really wanted the recipe. so my dad offered to leave a $500 tip after one of their meals in exchange for the recipe and they agreed. the restaurant has since closed which makes the recipe even more special. i’ve never attempted to make it because truthfully i’m always been intimidated. it feels so involved, the layers, the soaking, the egg whites, the dusting. but it was so simple (and i’m not just saying that) and it really is a high impact dessert, you make this for a dinner party and people are going to be impressed! – joanie

Tiramisu
serves 12
recipe by meg cusack, adapted from Excelsior Cafe in Telluride, CO

• 1 400 g package of lady fingers (not all stores carry these, we found ours at sprouts but an italian market would have them too)
• 4 cups boiling water
• 3 teaspoons instant coffee (can be decafe or regular!)
• 6 tablespoons Kahlua
• 2 tablespoons + 1/3 cup sugar
• 3 egg yolks
• 1 1/2 pounds mascarpone cheese
• 10 egg whites beaten to stiff peaks
• unsweetened cocoa powder
• 2 -3 ounces bittersweet chocolate

how to make:

• bring water to a boil in a saucepan. turn off heat and add instant coffee, kailua, and  2 tablespoons sugar. stir mixture and set aside.

• with a hand mixer, beat 10 egg whites to stiff peaks form, stopping from time to time to scrape down the sides with a rubber spatula. you know the peaks have formed when you pull the blender up and the egg whites hold their shape. in a separate bowl, blend egg yolks and 1/3 cup sugar together with a whisk, stir in mascarpone cheese and then fold in stiff egg whites with a spatula; set aside.

• use a 9 x 13 ” glass pan and then dip 1/2 of each lady finger in coffee mix and layer in bottom of pan, generally lady fingers have one side that is crunchy with sugar, soak the other side and put the soaked side up (about 20 ladyfingers).

• next spread 1/2 of mascarpone mix on top. sift a solid layer of cocoa powder over top. sprinkle 1/2 of grated bittersweet chocolate on top of this.

• Repeat everything exactly as you did on the first layer. Top with cocoa powder, and shaved chocolate. chill in refrigerator at least 1 hour, but ideally 2-3 hours if you have the time.

• Cut into pieces and serve! this will last 2 days, but after that it starts to get a bit soggy so eat up!

one note from my mom: the ladyfingers you should use are found near the cookies at an import store- not the ones found in the dairy section of the grocery store.
