PREPARE FOR A HOUSE GUEST

this is the first house that i’ve lived in where we have a guest bedroom. i’m still working on the design of the room, but for now it’s just very simple. bed, chair, end table and some nice details. preparing for a house guest is one of my favorite things…stocking up at the grocery store with good snacks and flowers, cleaning up the room and preparing for their arrival. here’s a few things i like to do for a guest coming to town to stay…and i’d love to hear what you do, too!

clean up: i have two cats and i’d hate to think my guests were living with a bunch of pet hair. i remember when i used to buy a $25 vaccuum online when i was in college and it would break after three times. i got a dyson a while ago and it makes suuuuuch a huge difference. i open the windows in the room to let in some fresh air, put lavender sachets on the pillows, and make sure to do a little extra dusting that day.

set up: my mom taught me about being a good hostess. she always went out of her way when someone stayed at our house to make them feel VERY comfortable. i like to set up the room so it feels like they are checking into a hotel. one of my favorite hotels in austin has candles and a water pitcher with cucumber water sitting on a tray on the bed. i took note and try to do the same for my guests. a vase of peonies, a fancy candle, a fresh bath towel and a little chocolate go a LONG way. happy hosting!

shop these items: vacuum, marble tray, peonies,  candle, matches, chocolate bar, pitcher and , dot mug, bath towels.

what do you do to prepare for guests? what was a favorite thing someone did for your arrival when you stayed at their house? -briline2

VINTAGE CARS

the lease on my car is over in a few months and i’ve been trying to decide what my next car is going to be. i’m really not into that many new car designs, and i REALLY want a vintage car. have you ever bought one? are they just trouble or awesome? do tell! xo –bri

THAILAND TRIP / PART TWO

ok, we are on to our second post from the thailand trip. (see the first here) after 4 lovely days staying in ko lanta, we took a two-hour ferry ride (about $15 per person) to railay beach for the remainder of our trip. here’s all the details on where we stayed, what we did, where we ate, and all that good stuff. at the end of the post, i will answer questions i received and give a little advice on traveling to thailand. make sure to click after the jump, because there’s a looooot of pics!

pulling up to this beach really is epic. there are massive limestone rocks on either side of the beach, making it only possible to arrive by boat. (although it’s technically not an island) you get off the ferry and get into a long tail boat for a few minutes, since the ferry can’t take you all the way to the shore. again, you climb out of the boat into knee length water, drag your bags up the sand and our hotel was right in front of us. this was a much smaller area than we were before…no cars or scooters, just walking. i brought about 6 or 7 pairs of shoes, and should have only brought two: one pair of flip flops for the beach and boats and one pair of converse for scooters or long walks. really trying to learn my lesson and pack less. i did alright with the clothes but the shoes are the heavy part!

railay definitely seemed more touristy than ko lanta, but not too bad. i noticed that the prices were quite a bit higher, maybe due to the number of tourists, but also because they have to get everything to railay by boat.

HAPPY FRIDAY

well, happy friday! i’m currently on my way to my hometown of chicago to teach and bracing myself for the frigid weather when i get off the plane. LA has been so sunny, it feels almost like summer! which freaks me out because someone told me once that means an earthquake is coming and my irrational fears start spinning. anyways, i digress…let’s just look at this happy photo and forget i even brought that up. ha.

oh! and just a note in case you entered the awesome 6 day free trip to mexico here, make sure you do all of the steps required for entry or else we can’t count it! i’m seeing lots of s, but make sure you leave a comment too! thanks and good luck.
