MAGIC 8 BALL / PLEATED FASHION

magic 8 ball | pleated fashion

box pleat, knife pleat, inverted pleat, we’ll take them all! we’re seriously feeling all the pleats we’re seeing around town these days. chic, modern and sophisticated they’re showing up in jackets, skirts and dresses. they styles we’re digging today are ladylike, printed and even glamourous. we love how often they are paired with flat sandals or a pair of sneakers, such a good summer travel option when you don’t want to stick out like a tourist and want to pair a fashionable outfit with a comfortable shoe for walking.

TOKYO TRAVEL / PART 1

TOKYO! what a trip. so much to see. so much to explore. overwhelming, but amazing. exactly why i wanted to go and try to find a bunch of spots to share with you. because you gottttta go. let’s dive in..

tokyo travel guide 1 | designlovefest

we took a 4 hour flight from hong kong to tokyo and arrived into the narita airport. the airport is pretty far from everything (about 1.5 hours) so we decided to take the to the sheraton hotel and then a 10 minute cab to our hotel. it was about $26 a person as opposed to an expensive cab ride ($150-200) but it’s up to you, really. i actually liked the bus ride, it was nice, easy to book as you exit customs, and runs every 30 mins or something fast like that.

i’m going to try to break down what we did by neighborhood because there is a LOT to see in tokyo, and everything is pretty spread out. my suggestion is to use google maps on your phone and computer to plan the trip. type in a place you want to go and hit the little “saved” star so you get a bunch of stars on your map and you know how to plan your day. you don’t want to be going all over the city if you can stick in one neighborhood in the daytime and another in the evening.

tip: we rented little wifi devices from  that gave us a signal throughout the whole trip. verizon didn’t have a good data plan for the places we were visiting. we got two for four people so the signal would be strong. honestly worked perfectly in hong kong, and almost perfectly in tokyo. would also highly suggest a for keeping that phone charged because maps takes up a loooot of battery.

MEGURO

natalie and i got in late and went straight to sleep but then met up with jen and jesse in the morning. it’s always fun to meet up with someone you know, somewhere new. it’s so exciting. the hotel we stayed in was the through . it was definitely one of the most unique hotel experiences i’ve had. there is only 18 rooms, and we were able to move around and see a bunch of them. some are very modern and minimalist and some are very wacky and themed (stuffed animal theme or ship theme! ha) the place kinda felt like an ace hotel, but in japan. i liked having my morning coffee in the lobby and the store on the 2nd floor is absolutely stunning (a must.) as far as location, i felt it was sort of out of the way from things we wanted to see and more chill and residential, but a great hotel regardless. and we did find a lot of cool stuff in the meguro neighboorhood that were worth checking out. there’s also a lot of vintage shopping here!

GIRLS SPA NIGHT

girls spa night | designlovefest

since i’ve moved in i haven’t had as many get togethers as i would like. i’m leaving town for a few weeks and thought it would be a good time to get a small group together for a little girls night fun at my house. just a few girls doing face masks, catching up, eating healthy, sipping champagne, and loungin’ around in white robes. i much prefer hangouts like this to going out! quality time…

we worked with one of our partners, , who supplied us with all of the goods we need for the night, , face mists, oils and more. all of the guests were greeted with white robes, a small bundles of flowers, a turkish towel and some palo santo as a take home gift.

we wanted to keep the spa vibes alive so we created a tea station with fruit infused water and a salad bar with all of the toppings you could dream of, and a big bowl of chips and guacamole for good measure.

once everyone was cozy in their robes we started the night by all applying the  and then laying around with cucumber slices on our eyes while it dried.

as you can see, we really took the spa relaxation part verrry seriously. after we took the masks off, we put on their and then curled up on the couch for girl talk (and wine). i planned to watch movies, but we ended up just talking the whole night instead!

it ended up being such a fun and laid back night. definitely going to start hosting these more often. do you ever host girls nights like this? sometimes it’s fun to stay in and put your feet up, huh?

PEANUT BUTTER BANANA MINI PIES

peanut butter banana mini pies | designlovefest

certain recipes and foods are really nostalgic for me and this recipe happens to be one of them. my dad use to bring this peanut butter banana pie home for my mom on her birthday from the fancy bakery in town and it was exciting for everyone. somehow my mom managed to snag the recipe and it definitely stands the test of time and is truly one of my favorite desserts. we’re sharing the recipe below with one small change, mini pies instead of full size! -joanie

serves: 12

ingredients:
• 6 1/4 ounce cream cheese (room temperature)
• 7 1/8 ounce powdered sugar

• 3/4 cup peanut butter
• 2 1/2 cups whipping cream
• 1 cup good quality semi sweet chocolate chips, divided

how to make:
• mix crust ingredients together and press very firmly into your pan and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees.
• remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes. we pulled the crusts out of the pan to make assembling them easier but you can also leave them in the pan as you top them.
• melt 1/2 cup chocolate chips and spread over the bottom of your crusts. you can use more if needed.

• sauté 1 of the sliced bananas in the half and half and mush it. spread this on top of the chocolate layer. add sliced bananas in a circle on top.
• blend the cream cheese and powder sugar, add vanilla and cream together. add peanut butter and mix well. in a separate bowl whip the heavy cream until medium peaks form. fold the cream into the peanut butter mixture. you can either spread this on top or use a pastry bag to pipe this on top of the mini-pies. chill until firm.
• melt the last half of the chocolate chips and put into a plastic bag. clip off a tiny corner of the bag and squeeze it on top of the pies in whatever pattern you desire. you could write a phrase, etc. chill again, serve and enjoy!

OFF THE SHOULDER LOOKS

off the shoulder looks | designlovefest

in a style time that is all about showing the midriff we’re all about showing a little shoulder! it’s discrete, comfortable and totally appropriate for so many situations. whatcha gonna wear on that second date? or to brunch with your girlfriends? or running around town on a weekend? an off the shoulder top/dress, that’s what! we’re showing you how it’s styled two ways, the boho way and the chic way.

the boho way is very off duty vacation mode, it’s airy and free flowing and could easily transition from day to night. hair down with a pair of sandals to hair up with a pair of heels, easy! here’s 10 cute looks we found over on …

and now for the chic of it, the more sophisticated silhouette. less frill more structure. there is something really beautiful about showing your neck line and then covering everything else up with a mid-length skirt or a pair of trousers. it feels natural to want to layer necklaces with these off the shoulder looks because there is so much exposed skin but we’d recommend going for a pair of statement earrings and leaving the neck area clean and bare.
