GIFT GUIDE / STOCKING STUFFERS

this could be called stocking stuffers or just smaller, meaningful gifts that won’t take up all the room in your suitcase but will still give the receiver a general feeling of glee!

$4o (25% off that price today!) – because who doesn’t love a fun hat to wear all winter long!

$48 – a major office favorite around here. this mist gives you an instant refresh and a bit of hydration which is seriously needed these time of year. spritz it on right before you put on your make up!

 – every single one of us is going to need a massage after the holidays are over so set someone you love up with a gift certificate to treat themselves. if you’re in LA our favorite go to spot is which offers really reasonably priced massages in the most relaxing setting.

 – i love all of the glossier products. i’m really not a make up girl and their products let me bump up my look for a night out without having that heavy i’m wearing make up feeling. their cloud paint is a gel based blush which blends really beautifully into the skin. i also love their boy brow.

$28 – i own this incense and love it. you don’t need an incense holder. they come in little pyramid shapes and several delicious scents. it’s one of those things that someone might not buy themselves because it’s $28 but would be delighted to receive as a gift.

$28 – everyone needs a few tools hanging around for the occasional ikea assemble and such. we have this little kit at our office and it works great in a pinch.

$55 (25% off that price today!) – i know i post about these cape scarves all the time but i do think they are the perfect gift. excellent to bring while traveling on an airplane, perfect to throw on over your shoulder at the beach or to toss in your bag when you leave the house for the evening it might get chilly.

$36 – no one is above the occasional tired + puff eyes and these little hydrating gels do the trick. especially with all the holiday cocktail parties in our future.

$7 – there is something really depressing about january and trying to muster up the energy to dive back into our normal routine. so i love the idea of gifting someone these weekly meal planning recipes. every friday they would get set 5 new meal ideas emailed to them for the week along with photos of each dish, prep-ahead tips and a grocery list. and it’s only $7/month. i personally really enjoy cooking but coming up with something to make is not always the easiest so this idea seems genius to me.

TOMATO SOUP!

tomato soup | designlovefest

’tis the season for soups! in the last week i’ve made chicken noodle, broccoli cheddar, white bean with kale and sausage and this tomato soup that we’re about to share with you. my aunt anne is my go-to recipe expert as she bakes and cooks hundreds of recipes and shares the ins and outs of what’s good on her . if i ever need a recipe tested or perfected she’s my go-to girl! i asked her for the very best tomato soup recipe and she shared this one that she got from in denver.  it’s so simple and decadent! important note, make sure you use a good quality butter and tomatoes! i value recipes on two things, how they taste (obviously) and the ease with which they come together. i like cooking but i don’t want to spend too much time doing it. this recipe fits both of my criteria. i hope you make some this week and enjoy it with a grilled cheese sandwich. – joanie

the kitchen’s tomato soup
serves: 6-8
what you’ll need:
1 large onion diced
• 1 1/3 sticks unsalted butter
• 48 ounces good quality whole peeled tomatoes, undrained (San Marzano brand is recommended!)
• 1/3 cup heavy cream
• extra virgin olive oil

• in a large pan, melt butter over low heat. add the chopped onion and a big pinch of salt. reduce heat to very low, cover and cook onions for 30 minutes, until translucent and soft but not browned.

• add the tomatoes with their juices. increase heat to simmer and cook for 25 minutes.

• blend the soup in your vitamix or blender (you may have to work in batches!) slowly adding the cream and adjusting the salt to taste. in my opinion, this soup needed a lot of salt! serve hot with a drizzle of olive oil!

MADEWELL SALE!

if, like me, you missed all of the black friday sales just launched a major one that i think might even be better than their one last week! so many pretty pinks and yellows, velvets and silks and all sorts of cool boots for the winter season. i’ve rounded up 12 items that are favorites that i either own and love or would love to own. the metallic wide leg pants are seriously calling my name! as i mentioned before, i’m also a big fan of their as well. let me know what you buy or if you have something you love that i haven’t included! Xx – joanie

– i love a classic cableknit sweater and this color is such a pretty and modern take on a timeless design. and of course you can never go wrong with the cream option as well.

– such a smart little design with the arm holes that let you keep this scarf secures over your shoulders

– i’m ordering these pants asap. i have the denim version and love them but these are so chic and perfect for casual holiday gatherings.

– Madewell makes very flattering and comfortable jumpsuits. I own a version of this from last spring and i wear it all the time. You can put a turtleneck under this one and wear it all winter long.

– one thing that’s often missing from my closet are causal shirt options that are not a t-shirt. this one would be a great addition. i like that it’s long sleeved and has the simple addition of the tie in the front that sets it apart.

– i just bought a jacket this color in paris and i’m in love with it! it’s such an unexpected shade to wear in the winter and it really does go with so many things. i’ve been wearing mine non-stop!

– the perfect holiday travel pant or just laying around the house and wanting to be in pajamas without actually wearing your pajamas.

– madewell makes some seriously good boots and these blue velvet ones are such a nice departure from black!

– neutral color with a fun twist makes this sweater very wearable!

– i own these boots and i’ve worn the hell out of them. i just took them to europe and walked 8 + miles a day in them without issue.

– these metallic candles are the perfect hostest gift this holiday season!

– a sweet little mini skirt but the season, tights recommended!

ARTIFACT UPRISING GIFT GUIDE!

artifact uprising gift guide | designlovefest
artifact uprising gift guide | designlovefest

i’ve shared my love for a couple of times here on the blog and i thought it would be fun to team up with them and create a gift guide this holiday season. as a very sentimental person, giving the gift of memories is one of my favorite things to do. remember when i gifted everyone on my birthday trip their own marfa photo book? so many special times all captured in a book! i wanted to create a guide that was accessible to many different price points and also show how there is a photo gift for every area of the house and person in your life. i think that people often feel like photo gifts have to be a book or a framed personal image but they have so many options beyond that. a beautiful (and enormous!) print for your friend’s living room, a floral calendar for your mom’s office, a small hanging print for your brother’s apartment, a photo book for your partner’s coffee table, a little flip book for your sister’s wedding, etc. here are some items that i created this year for the important people in my life…. (and there’s a discount code!)

A LARGE FORMAT PRINT

jesse and i collaborated on that gorman photo shoot in the sand dunes and it was really special for us. this year for the holidays i thought it would be nice to gift her a large print of one of our favorite photos from the day for her new home. still going to frame it but it looks good on its own too!

i am obsessed with these books! probably my favorite thing on their site. they look amazing on the coffee table. perfect as a wedding gift, a birthday or christmas. it’s so fun to sit and make them while reliving the photos. this year i made justin a book of our europe trip and he loved it! (he got it a little early because i couldn’t wait haha)

A SMALL INSTAGRAM BOOK

my sister got married this year and we had the best time in austin celebrating her bachelorette weekend. i made a little book with all the photos i took from the trip and ended it with a few of them i snapped at the wedding. she’s also very sentimental so i am sure she will cherish it! (ps, it’s so affordable, only $15!)
