TRAVELING TO PERU

peru travel guide | designlovefest

i am finally home for a while in los angeles! it’s been a pretty intense few months of travel, but i’m grateful to have seen so many beautiful cultures and find inspiration from all over! it’s crazy how you will always take away something very important from each trip, whether that’s a lifestyle shift you want to implement, a whole new cuisine to experiment with, and i always seem to draw my eyes to colors and patterns from countries i’ve never been to.

PERU! what a wild ride. we went with a company called and they planned the whole adventure. our host, andrew, was very fun and full of passion for travel so it was cool to go on a trip with him and a group of 10 other people. that always makes me a little nervous at first (i’m going to be writing about my social anxiety soon) but i pushed myself to open up and had such amazing results. we met some really really lovely people and it definitely made the trip more dynamic. it was nice to have them plan the details, it made things less stressful and allowed us to fit so much in. you can see all their upcoming trips , including some to cuba!

we did a LOT, but here are some highlights from the trip. thank you so much to for planning such a new and exciting experience in peru!!

we were staying in this adorable little town called Cusco. there were charming narrow streets with flowers on wooden balconies, colorful pom poms in the windows, alpacas and baby goats around most corners, lots of stairs, Inca stonework, and tons of history. we stayed at that’s a little outside of the main busy area on a quiet street.

we had a ton of different fun activities we could do once we rested and got adjusted to the altitude (which was pretty intense for us) we took a cooking class that was really fun! we made ceviche and risotto and pisco sours. i loved it!

i was also there with my friend & photographer who was shooting my (soon to be released) target travel line! we were trecking suitcases, backpacks and accessories all around peru to show all the ways you can travel with the designlovefest line. but more on that in a few weeks!!

we went to the market in cusco, the san pedro market as well as the market in pisac (i really liked that one) so many amazing rugs and handmade items!

this was a really special meal that was made by an adorable family on a farm. they prepared an Andean dish of pachamanca, which is a mixture of spiced meat and vegetables buried in the ground under hot stones to cook. i love how much love, appreciation and celebration is incorporated into their cooking traditions! it was mesmerizing.

one of the top 5 favorite things i’ve seen traveling so far, the maras salt mines! we went when the sun was setting and it was gorgeous! it’s other worldly, really.

we hiked freaking machu picchu! and it was HARD. and rewarding. and hard. and COOL. we did the 6 hour hike up and then took the bus down. i still can’t believe we did it!! when i would feel weak i would just tell myself that my body IS stronger than my mind and to take it at the pace that felt okay. a very memorable day for sure!

i was so inspired by the food there and the presentation, i wanted to try and recreate some of the Peruvian dishes once we got home! it was fun to bring those flavors into our kitchen and look back on our time there.

Andrew’s trips are the best; I joined one of his trips to Cuba last year. I just got back from Peru and the salt ponds were one of my favorite things as well, outside of Machu Picchu and wandering the streets of Cusco. Love your pictures!

I’m always so amazed at the colors you find in everyday life and especially while traveling. Your creativeness is so inspiring! I’m not sure if you’ll know it, but I love the backpack your friend is wearing with the dark blue flap, pocket and straps. Do you happen to know the brand? Also, congrats on finishing the hike! What an amazing experience 🙂
