HOLIDAY TASTING PARTY!

hard to believe that the holidays are right around the corner! i can already feel the anticipation starting to build. one of the biggest (and best!) elements of the holiday season is the food and drinks that go with all of the parties with family and friends. there is always a plethora of functions to attend and justin and i also want to do our own hosting at our house. (the company behind my amazing refrigerator i got earlier this year) asked if we’d want to host a holiday tasting party where we could invite friends to try out festive food and drinks in preparation for the season. the idea was that we’d share appetizers and drinks that people could taste and get inspired by for their own holiday cooking.

holiday home entertaining can be overwhelming but here are a few things i always do that are simple but make for a memorable and relaxing evening. 1. clean the house. very important, a clean house makes me feel calm and ready to host people. 2. create a grocery list a few days ahead of time when you have 30 minutes to sit down and go through and see what you have and what you still need. i often use instacart and can order directly through my which makes it easy. 3. buy some flowers and light some candles – to me, those are the most important two elements to setting the mood (oh and music, t00!). we had do the flowers for this event which were amazing but i have purchased flowers from trader joe’s many times in the past for parties. 4. make a playlist, also a very important step. i use spotify which syncs and plays from the fridge. i also love that it pulls up the album art of the song that’s playing. it always seems like people end up congregating in the kitchen even though the dining room and living room are wide open.

we worked with whose food we love. they are committed to quality ingredients and everything they serve is packed with flavor and doesn’t feel too heavy or rich. we’re going to share two of the recipes they made, their squash and avocado toast and sweet potato rounds which were both so delicious.

talmadge from  put together a cocktail and wine pairings for us to go with each of the five appetizers we served. the cocktail (recipe below!) had pineapple in it which was a nice departure from all of the cranberry, egg nog, and heavier drinks typically served during the fall and winter. he also made cute little take home bags with a bag cookies and a bottle of wine for the girls and a beer for the boys. you have to check out their in culver city!!

Cocktail: The Gentleman’s Punch

1.5 oz bourbon
1 oz pineapple gum syrup
3/4 oz lime juice
4 oz ginger beer
2 dashes angostura bitters

• combine all ingredients into a tall glass (a collins or high ball glass) and stir briskly. add ice add garnish with a pineapple wedge.

for wines he recommends the Broc Cellar’s Love White Blend for the white and the Citizen’s band Pinot Noir as the red.
