MY HEALTH CHALLENGE / 08

this week, see my 7.5 week body before and after. can’t believe i am putting this out there. but hey, it’s motivation to keep going! you’re going to laugh when you see it.

joanie: i’ve been on a burpee kick. there was a reason your high school coach use to make you do so many of these, they really work. they use every single muscles in your body. do 15 of them and you’ll be dripping in sweat. i like to do 10 burpees, 10 high knees and 10 mountain climbers and then do sets of all of them at 9, and then 8, etc and try going all the way to one. it’s so hard, i can really only get down to the sets of 4 before i have to stop. i like to do this at the half way point on my runs, mixes it up and keeps my heart rate varied.

bri: i’ve been working out 4-5 days a week now. cardio barre, hip hop dance class (which i burned 770 calories according to my watch and was so fun!!) and pop physique. i’m still doing which allows me to do different kinds of workouts for $99 a month. joanie keeps trying to get me to go to this insane work out with rowing, running, and TRX. i’m annoyed just thinking about that, but maybe someday i’ll just bite the bullet and go.

also, i have been wearing for lower impact workouts and love it. so chic. and are a fave.

joanie: someone once told me that sweet potatoes work to balance out your hormones so let’s just say i’ve been eating a lot of those. i like to make sweet potato hash browns in the morning (grated and cooked with coconut oil) and put two over easy eggs on top. i also just bought a cast iron skillet and we’ve been experimenting with cooking meats and fish in it. would love any suggestions that you might have! i’ve also been wanting to get back into drinking green smoothies in the morning, i use to make all the time and it’s actually really delicious and makes a noticeable difference in your skin. but i just can’t get myself to buy that many greens at the store, they go bad so fast and take up so much space. what’s your go to smoothie recipe? i need some inspiration.

bri: i’ve been following the “eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper” this week and i notice i feel lighter on my toes in the morning when i wake up. this is so counterintuitive for me, considering i’m so used to eating the most at dinner time. i’m also doing my best to not eat late at night (usually past 7:30pm) and getting a full night’s rest. i’ve also been eating spicy foods because they say that it speeds up you metabolism. not sure if i believe that, but i like spicy food so it’s cool anyway.

also, i made it 13 out of the 14 days i said i wasn’t going to drink alcohol. i guess i’m a rule breaker at heart. i’m going to keep going for a little while and limit my alcohol to 1-2 nights a week. sadly, it really does make a difference (i miss you, bloody marys.)

i realized that the first month of working out, i wasn’t really on a diet. i had a lot of cheat days with alcohol or bad food at events. i’ve only noticed a difference once i committed to eating better for real. and the nice part about it is that i don’t feel like i’m starving myself at all, just making better choices. after all, they say weight loss is 80% or more of what you eat, not how you workout.

joanie: i definitely have a lot more muscle definition then before we started this challenge. i think the fact that we keep mixing up the work outs really helps and also the fact that i’m accountable to someone else has helped me skip a lot less of my workouts especially since i know bri will ask me if i worked out today, or how i’m planning to workout. before we started this #dlfgetfit program i was pretty content with my pilates and running schedule but i think my muscles were getting use to the movements. i could go through a whole pilates class without really engaging my mind since i knew exactly what we were going to do, and now with moving in so many different ways i really have to work and pay attention. i notice soreness in muscles that i clearly hadn’t been working.

bri: i figured there was no better way to show you, then to just SHOW YOU. noted: should have taken the pics in a swim suit to avoid these awkward photos haha.

i notice most of the difference in the tightness of my skin. see how i was getting cellulite on the left? my stomach and legs feel a lot tighter now. i also notice the side of my thighs slimming down and fitting better in pants (see that leg outline on the right has come in. and how random that my cat was in the same place in both photos?) i’m also happy to report that belly bulge on the left has seemed to flatten out mostly. the other day i looked in the mirror and noticed that my face was looking a lot less round too. as of now, i am down 5 or 6 pounds depending on when i weigh myself, and i really think i have gained some muscle as well. this week i have seen the most progress, so i am pushing on forward because i still have a ways to go to reach my goal. i highly recommend taking weekly body pics, they really help.

    joanie, for green smoothies, freeze your greens! it’s so easy – mix them up with a little water in a blender and then freeze in ice cube trays. HUGE game changer for me to not have to have fresh greens on hand all the time. i’ve been doing this with a bunch of other veggies too and it works like a charm. i even did the same thing with mint leaves (just a few whole leaves in each tray, then fill with water) because i love smoothies with mint but never have fresh herbs on hand. it’s so much easier!

    Your progress is awesome! I just started doing Amanda Bisk’s Fresh Body Fit Mind workout guide and it’s AMAZING! I’ve been taking pics and it also helps me. I feel like I can’t fit in workouts, but the guide is designed to do two 20 min workouts a day – I’m 10 days in and have lost about 4 pounds which is INSANE for me. I think it has just totally shocked my body and the 20 minutes in the morning and 20 min at night helps my metabolism out a lot. It’s really challenging, but addicting – you should definitely check it out! I find it easy to fit in 20 minutes rather than a full hour.

    Truly love following this – your candor especially! Looking good! I just started Bar Method based on your comments about liking those sorts of classes and while I thought I was in ok shape before, it is successfully kicking my butt, but I am loving it and realize there were several muscles I was clearly not hitting.

    Joanie, my go-to daily smoothie is two big handfuls of kale, 1 frozen banana, 1 big handful of frozen mango, 1 handful of frozen strawberries, 1/4 can light Trader Joes coconut milk, and water as needed to blend.

    Best part is you only need fresh kale – only one fresh veggie purchase and so good for you! Also, I prep my blender the night before sans liquid so that the frozen fruit blends easier in the mornings.

I too am on the same trek, 8 weeks of eating healthier (no specific diet, just watching calories with MyFitnessPal) and 8 week program of Fitness Blender. I have 3 weeks until my trip to Maui! You have firmed up and do I dare say it… you look like you are GLOWING!

    CAST IRON! Cast iron is life. The most important points in cast iron care are: never use soap, rarely use water, season regularly. I wipe mine clean after each use and cover it with a very thin layer of oil. For seasoning: wipe it with a thin layer of oil and put it in a 300 degree over for 30 minutes. This will create a kind of non-stick layer of seasoning on the pan.

    I lost lot of weight after giving birth to my sweet girl and weight even 22lb less then pre pregnancy. Yeah, breastfeeding is like liposuction XD.
    But I really need to eat healthier and establish a workout routine.

    Joanie, you have to freeze your greens, girl! I had that same problem where my spinach would go bad before I got to it all and then a friend was like put it in the freezer and I was like oh yeah, duh. Kale and spinach both freeze well. I usually do frozen kale or spinach, frozen pineapple, strawberry, or mango, banana, almond milk, and chia seeds. Sometimes I throw in some ice to make it extra cold.

    Green smoothie tip: You can freeze the greens you’re going to use, and then they take up much less space and won’t go bad. I buy a supersize bag of power greens at Costco, then divide it into quart-size freezer bags in big handfuls. Smoosh them as much as you want, it’s not like they need to be pretty. 🙂 Freeze, and then they can be crunched down even smaller. My fave green smoothie combo is frozen strawberries, frozen pineapple, frozen greens, and a bit of apple juice or coconut water. Keep at it, you’re doing great!

Haha–that seems so creepy to say, but I know you were a bit sad a few weeks ago how the weight on the scale wasn’t really coming down–but I don’t think that matters and that taking photos and measurements is a more accurate way to track progress in addition to how you FEEL about your life and body.
