lately i have felt a shift in my style. i am not sure if it’s just because i am getting older (my style has really evolved since i started this blog in 2009), or because i seem to change my style about twice a year for the past 10 years. of course i am still a fan of bright and energetic design…but i’ve been much more drawn to classic and simple these days.

it might have happened when i was forced to think about the style of my new home and i kept coming back to clean lines and muted colors. or because i may have burnt myself out on the outrageous and loud.

who knows, maybe it’s just a phase. or a quarter life crises. not sure, but i like it for now.

it’s sort of fun to watch your style evolve over time and pinpoint the years of change. we all have style influences in our lives. have you ever noticed you can make a new friend or boyfriend and mold to their style without even knowing it? i find that pretty interesting.

Yes! I do know what you mean! Lately I have felt myself being drawn to a more Kinfolk-ish sort of aesthetic. While I don’t see my style completely shifting, I do love the peaceful and simple lifestyle that the classic style conveys and do want more of that type of thing in my life… with bright bursts of color!

I love your style, Bri and can’t wait to see you meld your bold style with classic imagery and see where it takes you!

    Chick Tyler says:

I know exactly what you mean! Dude is a fan of designing with green in mind. I used to HATE it. But now I find that when I’m doing a design, green starts popping into my mind.

But I like this phase of yours! I’m a big, big fan of clean lines!

    japolina says:

My style keeps changing too. Sometimes it depends on my weight or what I’m doing in my life. Right now, I’m trying to be comfortable yet chic.

    bri says:

ha, so true. even 5 pounds can change style! i was just talking about that with a friend.

    Brianna says:

Totally rang true for me today! I have been thinking a lot about my style (I guess a rebrand does that) and I too have been drawn more to simple color palettes with clean lines.

I absolutely know what you mean! Decorating your home really has an affect on how you perceive your personal style. I was all about brights before I came to Alaska but after furnishing the home in sea blues and wheats, I find that I am rather enjoying dressing in the same vein. And it feels right =)

    Katie says:

I love the bright, colorful style so much even though I’m really a classic, neutrals kind of gal at heart. I have to remind myself to stay true to what is more me, but it’s hard when you love both looks!

    Katie says:

…It’s especially hard when trying to brand myself! Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated πŸ™‚

    bri says:

katie – i think it’s totally fine to have two styles! i have always been drawn to both and juggled back and forth. it just depends on mood or phases of life. when it comes to designlovefest, i lean more towards the bright…but i let out my other style on or other places. i like to stay pretty consistent, but life isn’t consistent so i think it’s fine to mix it up.

That is so truly, especially with blogging and all the inspiration out there. It’s quite easy to keep reinventing your style. I found that lately I’ve been influenced a lot by beauty/make-up bloggers, being conscious of that I did a huge clean out of all my beauty products and am going back to my simple, minimalist approach to beauty and make-up. It’s easy to get carried about but it’s so important to be true to who you are and what you’re all about πŸ™‚

    Sarah says:

I happens to me a lot! I finally have felt a little more solidified/comfortable in my style lately, which has been very classic. I’ve gone through phases; the bohemian, the indie, the mexi cali. But I’ve been drawn to the American Classics. I feel good. They’re classic, sophisticated, but not stuffy. There’s a really fun vibe happening in the simplistic.

    anto says:

I think this is still gorgeous. Fun bold colors are always exciting but sometimes you need a relaxing an peaceful space like this one with muted colors.

I know exactly what you mean! It’s funny because I’m working on redoing a piece of furniture and I had to decide on a paint color which should be so easy. I’ve been using a lot of bright colors in my home, but lately I’ve wanted to include more neutrals. Reinventing your home (or your wardrobe) is energizing, especially as we move into a new season!

Oooh, I like where you’re going with this. Seems like the same thing happens to me also!

    Latrina says:

I completely agree. My style (in everything… not just my wardrobe) changes every year or so. But lately it seems more often. I get inspired by new things! The change in season differently influences me as well.

    christy says:

I feel like my style changes every month! It also depends on other outfits that I see other people wear too πŸ™‚ You guys all inspire me to look for different ways of vamping up my old styles

    Kate says:

    It’s always good to evolve!

    Bettina says:

I feel ya! I think it comes with age as well. I’m heading into my late 20s and have really started to gravitate to the much simpler things and back to my neutral roots.

    Noor says:

I so get you I have watched my style evolve like crazy in the past 10 years. I have became much more simple as well but thats they style so were doing okay. I went to fashion design school in Chicago and you know we were taught that the economy plays a huge part of the styles which as of now is rather simple.

    Sarolta says:

Change comes with age in my case. I turn 30 this year and it seems like my eyes need a bit of rest from all the color explosions I have gone through. So I try to wear only one bright piece at a time. It works in most cases πŸ˜‰

    Susann says:

When you are artistic, taste and style will always change!! I am getting close to 50 and my style and taste has changed and evolved and keeps doing that. There are always certain things I am drawn to and stick, in fashion or design, but things around it always change and evolve, it’s a beautiful thing…
I love your blog!!!!! You are probably the same age my daughter is, but art, fashion, design, is ageless. I am very much in awe of what you have accomplished and simply dare to do at your age!!!!Keep going, I have the feeling you will go very far, just stick with your intuition!!!!
This is totally random…but would you ever consider doing a blog on your hair routine? I don’t know, if you have gotten any rquests, but my hair looks very much like yours, and I would love to know your products, etc. Thanks!!!!!!

    Helena says:

I love this post. It’s good to see that other people keep changing their style as well. I wonder if you ever get to a point where you just stick with one style forever. Probably not… πŸ˜‰
I love the natural and clean tones of the images you picked by the way.

this is such a great reflection…i have noticed that i am definitely at a turning point with my style right now…both in my personal style & in my decorating style. in my personal style, i am looking for a little more clean-lined, ooo la la-ish look… but going more bold & punchy in my home style. funny how this happens and how you sometimes don’t notice the transition until you are already in it πŸ™‚ XO brynn

    Robin says:

I totally hear youβ€”this started to happen to me last year as well. I think part of it is age, and part of it is maybe just going through style phases like you said. It’s funny, but I feel like I’m starting to understand how important “classic” pieces are, good quality, and all of that. Not that I’m acting on it but yeah, finally starting to pay attention to the advice that’s drummed into your head from day one. We’ll see if it sticks. πŸ™‚
